IT'S TOUGHER FOR BRITISH HOPEFULS TO SHINE

1
The Blackburn boss said: "You need a steady turnover of talent. But there are only so many players who have the ability and the attitude to take on board what it needs to become a Premier League player.

"There are not that many spaces and many of them are taken up by foreign players. For a young British player to come through and be a Premier League player is possibly more difficult than it was in my time.

"They have to be exceptional players. You have to be single minded. That's why there is a big fallout of players from the academy system because the standard is so high. You do need a bit of luck and to be in the right place at the right time."

Blackburn Rovers boss Mark Hughes believes that it is tougher now for talented British players to make their mark at the highest level than it was when he played.

But Hughes, who came through the ranks at Manchester United before going on to play for the likes of Barcelona, Chelsea and Everton, is vowing to continue to give youth a chance at Ewood Park.

He handed a first start this week to local boy Matt Derbyshire against AS Nancy in the Uefa Cup and the 20-year-old forward played his part in Rovers' 1-0 win. Paul Gallagher, Jay McEveley and Republic of Ireland Under-19 international Eddie Nolan were all given run-outs to reduce the average age of the team.
