INTER TARGETS AUSTRALIAN YOUNGSTERS

1
Inter youth sector director Pietro Ausilio, assistant technical director Marco Monti, junior technical director Roberto Samaden and several other coaches on the staff will arrive in Sydney on January 20 and will conduct trials from January 21-25. Former National Soccer League player Vince Colagiuri, who played with Marconi and Apia Leichhardt, is the man behind the move.

"This is a great chance for the young talent in Australia," said Colagiuri, who runs a Football Mundial coaching academy and has direct links with Inter.

"Kids dream about this. One minute they are training and playing with their clubs here and the next they are mixing with the likes of Viera, Recoba and Adriano.

"The Inter coaches will pick two lucky players to go to Milan to trial, all expenses paid. It will be the chance of a lifetime."

Inter's interest in Australian football comes at a time when there is huge concern about the decline in youth development here, heightened by the failure of the Young Socceroos (under-20s) and Joeys (under-17s) to qualify for the next World Youth Championships.

According to Monti, who played Serie A with Inter, Lazio and Atalanta, the club is serious about its commitment.

"We want to establish firm football and commercial ties in Australia," he said.

"Camps, coaching seminars (in all major cities), a feeder club with coach/player exchanges and the development of a university level coaching course are all on Inter's agenda for Australia."

At this stage, Inter's visit will be restricted to two camps. The mornings will be with elite youth players 13 to 18 and the evenings with juniors six to 12.

Australia's stocks at junior international level might be low, but it won't stop Italian Serie A giant Inter Milan casting its net in the hope of finding some hidden gems.

The defending Italian champion will send its leading youth coaches to Sydney late next month in search of two local players to take home and develop.

Inter is also looking at the possibility of setting up a long-term presence in Australia as a means of shoring up its youth development.
