MARK HUGHES SAYS YOUNGSTERS WILL HAVE KEY ROLE AT MAN CITY

"The key message is that if you are good enough you will prosper here;” Hughes said

"Michael, Micah and Daniel are players who all have a real feeling for the club. I believe that is important if you want to progress."

Johnson, who missed yesterday’s Uefa cup fixture through injury, has put in a number of impressive performances since breaking into the first team at the start of last season, which has led some observers to draw comparisons with Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard.

Richard Dunne, the club captain, is keen to see the youngster return to action as soon as possible as Manchester City attempt to match the aspirations of their ambitious new owners.

"Jonno was one of our best players last season and we really missed him when he was out with injury;" Dunne said.

Jo, the 21-year-old Brazilian international, has also made an instant impression since arriving from CSKA Moscow for £19m in the summer.

Mark Hughes believes that the striker, who scored 44 goals in 77 games in Russia, has all the attributes to equally as successful in England.

"He is an outstanding young player and we feel he has the physical presence to make a real impact in the Premier League;” said Hughes.

Mark Hughes, the Manchester City manager, has re-assured supporters that the club’s younger players will not be discarded in favour of expensive foreign imports.

The Eastlands side were recently taken over by the multi-billionaire Abu Dhabi Group, who stated their ambition with the purchase of Robinho, the former Real Madrid star, on transfer deadline day for £32.5million, a British transfer record.

Vincent Kompany, the Belgian international central defender, and former favourite Shaun Wright-Phillips also arrived at the end of August which caused concern that the club’s academy, which has recently produced players including Micah Richards, Daniel Sturridge and Michael Johnson, may now be overlooked.
