St.
Andrew's School is a boarding school located in
Middletown, Delaware. It currently is coeducational and
enrolls students in grades nine through twelve.
The school's
stately appearance has made it a famous location for
film and television. The Dead Poets Society, starring
Robin Williams, was filmed at the school, and mor
recently episodes of The West Wing.
St. Andrew's was founded in 1929 by Alexis Felix du
Pont, Sr. (1879-1948), a member of the prominent Du Pont
family. A small Episcopalian preparatory school, St.
Andrew's originally was a school for young men but has
evolved to about 280 students of all races and both
sexes. The school has an endowment of about 170 million
dollars, making it the second wealthiest school per
capita in the country. It is also unusually
socio-economically diverse, having dispensed 3.1 million
dollars in financial aid in 2005.
While the school has become more secular in nature, it
still retains many of its Episcopal traditions. The
campus remains free of drugs and other common teen
problems. Academically, St. Andrew's is often considered
to be one of the finest schools in the country. It
offers an average class size of eleven and state of the
art facilities, including a new Arts center built in
2004. While the school is academically challenging in
all disciplines, it is especially known for its
outstanding English department, chaired by Mrs. Darcy
Caldwell.
The current Headmaster is Daniel T. Roach, Jr. who
graduated from Williams College.
Although St. Andrew's sends its students to a variety of
universities, it is most notably a feeder school for
small liberal arts colleges. The Class of 2005 graduated
76 students, five to Williams College and seven to
Davidson College. The class of 2005 also graduated quite
a few who attend schools in the Ivy League, including
three to Harvard University, two to Columbia University,
five to the University of Pennsylvania, three to
Princeton University, one to Yale University, one to
Cornell University, one to Dartmouth College and one to
Brown University.
